Most welder qualification standards require that the welder has been actively working and has at least used the welding processes for which they are qualified. ISO 9606.1 and many other standards require a "confirmation of validity" every 6 months to demonstrate continuity.
There are a number of ways that proof of continuity can be achieved, but ISO 9606.1 only requires that
" The qualifications of a welder for a process shall be confirmed every 6 months by the person responsible for welding activities or examiner/examining body. This is confirming that the welder has worked within the range of qualification and extends the validity of the qualification for a further 6 month period"
If a welder qualification record does not have a confirmation of validity within the last 6 months, then it is not considered to be valid.
In comparison, "Revalidation" is a formal process that needs to be carried out based on the method used for welder qualification management and the associated validity duration. Three options are provided in ISO 9606.1
a) The welder shall be retested every 3 years
b) Every 2 years, reports must be recorded for testing of 2 welds made during the last 6 months of the validity period.
c) Indefinite validity provided set conditions are met and an ISO 3834-2 or ISO 3834-3 quality program is in place.
As stated in ISO 9606.1, the confirmation of validity is done by "the person responsible for welding activities". This does not require the person to be a certified welding supervisor. The important aspect is simply whether the "responsible person" has sufficient knowledge about the welder's activities and whether they have "worked within the range of qualification".
Furthermore, there is no requirement to record or show what the welder has worked on, or to provide any NDT reports. However, Welder Quals provides this as an option if the user wishes to.
